Gerhard Van Den Berg

Background

Van den Berg was born in Deventer in 1946, as the son of a Dutch furniture manufacturer. His artistic ability was developed at an early age by a training period with a painter. He was educated in furniture manufacturing at the Rotterham secondary technical school, and begun his career as a chair designer within his father's business. As co-founder of Montis, he sent many years as both the joint managing director and permanent designer. He resigned from these positions in 1990 and has since set up on his own. One of the most important prizes he has ever received is the Kho Liang first prize for his total work, characterized by its simple yet versatile design.
